Food & Nutrition

At HPRS, pupils are taught a range of practical cookery skills and principles of food safety. They learn about different foods, healthy eating, the importance of a balanced diet and where our food comes from.

Pupils learn to follow recipes, weigh and measure accurately. They then go on to explore different flavours and develop their own recipes.

They learn different methods of cooking; learn about and cook food from different cultures, and we arrange trips to local farms.

Pupils regularly prepare food for school events; coffee mornings, fundraisers, Christmas dinner and more. Here they develop team working skills and learn about preparing food for others.

We enter pupils for the Active Kids Cooking awards – nationally recognised and supported by Sainsbury’s, the Design and Technology Association and the British Nutrition Foundation.

At Key Stage 4, pupils can gain accreditation by completing units towards an ASDAN award and progressing on to complete a BTEC course in Home Cooking Skills.
